Seneca Nation
The Onondawaga (Onödowá’ga’, “People of the Great Hill”) live in what is known as Western New York. After preserving three territories in Western New York, the Seneca people developed their own constitution and elective form of government, officially becoming the Seneca Nation of Indians in 1848. Currently, The Seneca Nation is home to more than 8,500 enrolled members and consists of five territories including Allegany, Buffalo Creek, Cattaraugus, Niagara Falls, and Oil Spring. They are one of the six nations that make up the Hodinöhsö:ni’ (Iroquois Confederacy). A self-governing sovereign Nation that administers their own government, laws and economy pursuant to their constitution.
Throughout time immemorial, The Seneca Nation has faced many challenges, including forced removal from our ancestral lands, attempts at assimilation, and the impacts of colonialism. Despite these challenges, the Seneca Nation has remained resilient and has worked to preserve their culture and traditions. Today, the Seneca Nation continues to be a vital part of the Western New York Community and a leader in Native Nations self-governance, economic development, and natural resource conservation.
